Designing The House Minimalist 2013

Painting the wall with subtle colors can make the house minimalist 2013 look nice and flattering. Color is important to define the minimalist style in the living room, dining room or even kitchen. Ensure that the room is defined with simple, basic and uncomplicated elements and decors. You need to make it clean and simple, but the decor must be pleasing to the eyes. You need to banish the boring feel by accenting the room with functional items and eye popping colors. The room should be adorned with essential items. The necessary items should be replaced since they can make the room cluttered.

Some interesting colors that you can use to paint the wall include green, gray, blue, brown, tan, cream, taupe and black. The furniture pieces in the house minimalist 2013 should look simple and minimal. Each room is functional. For example, you can adorn the living room with a small set of sofa, a simple coffee table, a few lamps and a high tech LCD TV. If you need storage area, you can add shelves on the wall. The cabinet can bring extra storage space but ensure that it comes in clean lines without any ornamentation.

If you want to adorn the bedroom, you can have a simple bed frame, a bureau and a nightstand. A bookcase in the bedroom can be used to build a small reading spot. The wall in the house can be left in bare accent. There is no need for you to adorn it with lots of pieces. If it looks too boring, you can add two or three pieces of tapestries, photos, family pictures or metal arts. Adorn the wall with solid color. The house minimalist 2013 will be fun if you can avoid the placement of wall decal, mural, stencil and wallpaper for they can contribute to busy effect.

Natural Balance House

The Natural Balance House, the first home in the San Juan Islands to seek LEED Platinum certification, features a massive rainwater cistern, geothermal heating and an Orca-cam that provides truly killer views.

For this month’s installment of “Evergreen homes” — a series of posts in which I spotlight great green homes from my home state of Washington — I’m stepping away from the green building hotbed that is Seattle (the projects that I featured in March and April were both within Emerald City limits) … way far away. Today’s featured “Evergreen home,” the Natural Balance House, is located about 100 miles by car and ferry from Seattle, in the bustling little town of Friday Harbor on beautiful San Juan Island.

The LEED Platinum-seeking Natural Balance House is a testament to the concept that green home building can be done right (and then some) outside of a green building-crazy metropolis of more than 600,000 people. The waterfront home, designed by British Canadian firm Blue Sky Design and built by San Juan Island-based Ravenhill Construction, received a fair amount of press from both green building websites and local media outlets this past winter during its final months of construction. Now, with the home completed just several weeks ago, owners Glen and Deb Bruels are opening the doors of their low-impact retirement residence to the public for tours every Saturday in May from 11 a.m to 4 p.m.

That said, Friday Harbor isn't the most easily accessible place on earth (unless you just happen to be tooling around the San Juan Islands in your private seaplane) but if you live or are visiting the area, by all means stop by.

If your May travel plans don't call for the San Juan Islands, no sweat, as the Natural Balance House is a green building showcase of sorts, not just a private residence. Having fastidiously documented the building of their home through blog entries and photos, the Bruels hope their home will be both inspirational and educational. Hell, not every home, no matter how exceptionally eco-friendly, has its own website, Twitter account and Facebook page.

Not surprisingly, the 3,600-square-foot home’s laundry list of eco-friendly features is impressive: Geothermal in-floor radiant heating, LED lighting and energy-efficient appliances throughout, solar hot water heating, an advanced home automation system, a heat recovery ventilation system, structurally insulated panel (SIP) roofing, triple-glazed windows, low-flow Kohler fixtures, reclaimed wood furniture from Meyer Wells, salvaged wood cabinetry and flooring, sustainable landscaping, and more — you name it, the Natural Balance House has it.

Perhaps the most remarkable feature of the Natural Balance House is the 19,500-gallon rainwater cistern that acts as the sole source of water for the residence. Yep, all of the water used in the home, even for drinking, is reclaimed rainwater. When relying strictly on rainwater harvesting having such a massive cistern does help (check out the view into it from cistern from the repurposed ship hatch that’s in the master bedroom closet, below) as does having a 3,000-square-foot vegetation-covered roof that naturally pre-filters rainwater in addition to moderating heat gain and loss through the roof.

Because it is a land with a steep slope, the application of the treaty to adapt housing to the formal charges of the land to ensure better integration and harmonization, reduction of landscape impacts.

Victorian House Interiors

There’s a lot to love about Victorian house interiors. With their ornate architecture, elegant proportions and intricate detailing, they were built to be admired, and they’ve stood the test of time, too. One third of the houses in Britain were built before the First World War, and most of these are Victorian. Under Queen Victoria’s rule, Britain saw a boom in new builds – in a period of less than 75 years, over 6m houses were built, and the majority still stand today.

Gothic Revival – The epitome of high Victorian taste, especially popular after Pugin designed the Houses of Parliament in Gothic style in the late 1830s. Look for pointed roofs and arches, stained glass windows, embellishments such as gargoyles and ecclesiastical touches such as turrets.

Jacobethan – In contrast to the architectural excesses of the mid-Victorian period, this style, also known as ‘Tudorbeathan’, revived the style of Tudor or Stuart England. Look for castle-like fortifications, steep roof gables, intricate brickwork, high chimneys and half timbering.

Arts & Crafts – The late 1860s movement that was a reaction to the Industrial Revolution, Arts & Crafts valued craftsmanship above all. Look for small cottage-style wooden casement windows, sloping roofs, and bare stone and brick work.

Art Noveau – The most distinctive design style of the turn of the century, some late Victorian homes would feature Art Noveau details such as curving, plant forms, usually in detailing such as stained glass, tiles and fire surrounds.

Basic Ideas of Modern House Designs

Designing and decorating a modern, or contemporary, home can be fun, but this style is distinctive. Without the appropriate color and texture combinations, modern house designs will not look well-put together. To ensure that your modern house is indeed of a modern style, follow a few simple guidelines.

Innovative architectural elements are a trademark of modern home design. Repurposed industrial buildings, urban high rises, live/work spaces and lofts comprise some of the modern spaces popular today, all of which require different approaches to architecture. Glass walls, sliding walls, inner courtyards and skylights integrate exterior and interior spaces. Ladders and stairwells connect living spaces with work spaces, but typically keep them on separate floors. Open floor plans that join the dining area and living room, and sometimes the kitchen, often feature a bay of picture windows or solar tubes to allow natural light to spill into the cavernous space.

The modern or contemporary color palette is composed mainly of neutrals and is accented with bright, bold color. Pastels are not typically part of a modern decorating color scheme. You can choose any colors that you like, but you will need to be careful that they are complementary and well balanced. For example, if you wanted to use lime green, cobalt blue and white to decorate, you would need to carefully balance the amount of each color in the room. Balance could be achieved with this color scheme by having white walls, cobalt blue and white furniture or bedding, an area rug that contains all three colors, and a sprinkling of lime green accessories. Since lime green is the brightest and more overwhelming of the three colors, it should be used the least. White, being the neutral color of the three, should be used the most in the room. Cobalt blue is what would tie the other two colors together and provide a balance between very vibrant and very neutral. Here are some other modern color palettes that you can consider decorating your house with: citron, chocolate brown, cream and tan; cherry red, black, white and silver; turquoise, mocha brown and ivory; bright yellow, white and gray; cobalt blue, slate, white and charcoal; orange, cream and brown.

Modern house designs extend to the furnishings and layout. Multipurpose pieces function well in open floor plans or loft-style buildings. For example, a Shoji screen may serve as a window covering, room divider and artwork. A tall bookcase, long bench or skinny table adorned with plants sets a living room apart from a dining area. A covered porch, deck or patio allows gatherings to spill out from the home and into the garden, especially if you furnish outdoor areas with cushions, lighting, a fire pit and chairs. Modern space-saving devices such as closet systems and loft beds with desk areas or storage underneath often feature the crisp lines, light wood tones and metal accents that blend well with modern home design. Add color and style to a modern home design with fashionable light fixtures such as pendant lights above the dining room table or a funky chandelier painted periwinkle blue over the bed.

The decorative accessories you choose should have clean lines, color coordinate with the rest of your design scheme, and pull the larger elements of a room together. Be careful when choosing wall hangings and paintings for a modern house, you should choose a style of art that is modern, contemporary, eclectic or avant-garde. For example, if you were to put a Victorian painting into a modern room, no matter how nice the painting is, it will not fit into the style of the room’s design. Keep this in mind when choosing other types of decorative accessories as well. Also, remember that when decorating or designing a modern home, less is more. You do not want to over-accessorize, doing so will take away from the chic simplicity that defines modern design. Choose just a few accessories you like for one room.

Solids, stripes, geometric patterns and abstract motifs are ideal when decorating a modern home. Avoid floral since they do not work with a modern design scheme, and use animal prints sparingly throughout the room in the form of accent rugs and decorative accessories. The best textures for a modern or contemporary design scheme have clean lines. Avoid ruffles, lace and fringe, these do not complement or fit into modern design.

If you think modern house designs are limited to stainless steel cube construction and designer paint colors, think again. There are many influences on the modern design aesthetic, from the midcentury modern designs of Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles Eames to contemporary eco-design visionaries who integrate natural finishes, repurposed items and indoor/outdoor spaces into their structures. Modern design infuses everything from furniture hardware to window frames, so it is relatively simple to give a current home a modern makeover.
